Scientific research will probably never determine exactly how nature and nurture combine to make us what we are. With Rachel it looks distinctly as if both play a pretty important role. She normally uses our spiffy modern microscope for her yeast counts but today she decided to pull out her first microscope — the one she was given as a 21st birthday present quite a few moons ago. It was given to her by her father, Garrett, who obviously still remembers exactly how to use it. Garrett was in turn given it by his father, Fonso. Fonso bought it used at some stage during his very long life — a life marked by endless curiosity about science and technology.
And like most vintage pieces of technology, Fonso’s microscope (with the aid of a light source from Rachel’s smart phone) still works like a charm. They just don’t make them like they used to.
